Core awarded multi-utility contract for Scotlands largest regeneration project
- Wednesday, July 01, 2009
Core has recently been awarded a £1m contract by R&D Construction Group Limited, working on behalf of Dumfries and Galloway Housing Partnership, for an ambitious regeneration project.
The scheme is thought to be Scotland’s largest ongoing regeneration project, at various sites at Dumfries and Stranraer. It is estimated that the project will bring around £77m of new investment into the area.
The project will see existing older housing stock demolished and replaced by modern, affordable homes for rent and sale. An estimated 400 homes will be demolished and a further 500 built.
Core has been working with R&D Construction Group Limited over the past year to ensure they have a fully project managed multi utility package across three sites in Dumfries, Summerville Crescent, Lochside Extension, Lochside Central, and a fourth in Stranraer, Dicks Hill. A further site at Nursery Avenue, Stranraer should come on stream later this year.
Core will commence works on-site in the coming months – project managing all on-site diversion work and laying the new utility infrastructure. The contract will see the multi-utility company install the infrastructure for water and gas as well the electricity infrastructure for all of the sites.
R&D Construction Group Limited has already commenced onsite with the formation of the roads and ground clearance works at Lochside Extension, a greenfield site. Once completed the site will consist of 178 homes comprising of two, three and four bedroom semi-detached properties.
Site clearance has also commenced at Dicks Hill and Summerville Crescent with the demolition of existing housing, which will allow the site diversionary works to begin. Works at the fourth site at Central Lochside is not due to commence until mid 2010.
David Guthrie, Pre-contracts Manager of Core said: “We are delighted to have been offered the opportunity to work on such a high profile regeneration project.
“We are due to begin on-site diversions and have been liaising with the customer to ensure this will be completed in an efficient manner.
“Our biggest challenge now will be the installation of an electrical switching station and the diversion of the overhead lines at the Lochside Extension site. We will obviously need to maintain existing connections to the area whilst working to tight project timescales. We will be working closely with the developer to ensure that any disruption is kept to a minimum.”
Core is due to begin on site in September/October 2009 with the works expected to last for a 3 year period.
