Core wins Commonwealth Games Arena contract
- Tuesday, January 22, 2008

Work has begun on the new Commonwealth Games National Indoor Sports Arena in the east end of Glasgow – and Core Utility Solutions is the first company on the site.

Core has landed the key contract to divert and connect mains supply of high and low voltage electricity for the ambitious complex situated near Celtic Park. The facility will be unique in that it will house two separate arenas under one roof – the National Indoor Arena, which will host the badminton and other events at the Games, and the Velodrome, which will be the venue for all of the track cycling events. The arena will have seating for 5000 spectators and the Velodrome can accommodate 2000, with the ability to expand up to 4000 if necessary.

The arena and Velodrome will be linked by a connecting building which will form the new HQ for the national agency for sport in Scotland, sportscotland.
Glasgow City Council awarded Core the power infrastructure contract, which will see the utility company install the utilities to the new National Indoor Sports Arena, Velodrome and sportscotland headquarters. Work has already started on site to divert existing high voltage cabling and clear and lower the site by four meters. This initial phase of infrastructure work is expected to be completed by the end of February 2008.

The high voltage mains supply and low voltage connections cabling for the adjoining sportscotland facility will begin next year with final connections being completed by 2010. Peter Jones, Operations Director at Core said: “The Commonwealth Games coming to Glasgow in 2014 is a source of immense pride for the whole of Scotland and we are delighted to be playing our part in making this showpiece event a reality.

“The eyes of the whole world will be on Glasgow in 2014 and we are working alongside Glasgow City Council to ensure the city and its facilities are ready.

“This is an extremely high profile contract – which is not without its challenges – and we had to overcome some stiff opposition from our multi-utility competitors to secure it.

“Nevertheless, we are confident in our ability to deliver on time and on budget to allow the creation of a facility to rival the best in the world.”

The venue will be located within walking distance of the athletes’ village at Dalmarnock and is immediately adjacent to Celtic Park, where the Games’ opening ceremony will be held. Core hopes to build on its work at the new arena and has submitted proposals for further utility contracts in advance of the 2014 Commonwealth Games.
