Wigan Grand Arcade Case Study

4.5MVA - Point of Connection 800m from site.

Wigan Grand Arcade retail development consists of 35 units of various sizes. The full design load for the project was 4.5MVA and the Point of Connection was 800m from the build site.

On-site space constraints meant our skilled design team played a vital role in the success of this project. The team was flexible in their approach and provided solutions to meet our customers’ demands and satisfy the network requirements.

Our construction schedule was fully aligned with the main contractors’ tight build programme and ‘power on’ dates - it had to be - the best route to the development involved laying 1.6km of HV cable in one of Wigan’s busiest commuter routes including passing under the main InterCity rail bridge and along a dual carriageway. So, strong project management skills were vital to the success of the development.

Our client particularly appreciated our approach to the substation design. We provided a Compact Unit Substation with four transformers set out in a single chamber capable of supplying the landlord and the group metered supplies. A further substation was established separately to supply one on the larger retail units.

The project was completed ahead of schedule and the Arcade opened in early 2007.
